Infinity Ward has just hosted Call of Duty Next, a big reveal event forCall of Duty: Warzone 2.0,Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, andCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Over the course of an hour or so, Infinity Ward showcased some ofModern Warfare 2’s maps, detailed itsnew Gunsmith 2.0 system, revealed its plans forWarzone 2.0, and confirmed that the long-rumored DMZ mode is coming to the game on launch. On top of all that, Infinity Ward also gave some details on some new gameplay mechanics heading toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with some of its most interesting revolving around how the player moves.

Player-movement has always been a vital component of theCall of Dutymultiplayer formula. While more realistic military shooters likeBattlefieldgo for a more grounded, heavier movement speed,Call of Dutyhas always been synonymous with speed and fast precision. Based on the details given at Call of Duty Next, it seems as thoughCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is going to expand on this in a few key ways, bringing back some fan-favorite mechanics while also adding its fair share of new ones.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Movement System Is The Best of Both Worlds

During Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty Next showcase, a few minutes were dedicated to breaking down some ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s new movement mechanics. One big focus of the gameplay demo was the new ledge mechanic, whereby the player can hang from the sides of rooftops. While hanging, the player can either shoot using their sidearm, or hop up onto the platform in one smooth movement. This has the potential to add quite a bit of strategy tothe standardCall of Dutyformula, encouraging players to take their time and scout out a location before just jumping straight into the action.

Another big feature that the panel of Infinity Ward devs kept pointing to wasModern Warfare 2’s new swimming mechanic. In general,Modern Warfare 2is putting more of a focus on water combat than the series ever has before. Water vehicles, maps with large bodies of water, and swimming mechanics are all pretty new toCall of Duty.Unlike previous entries likeGhostsandBlack Ops 3,Modern Warfare 2has a complex, dedicated swimming system, with its own set of unique animations and mechanics. Players can now dive, and shooting underwater will slow down the velocity of bullets.

During thenewCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2gameplay trailershown at the event, fans can spot several characters cocking their weapon to the side in a motion similar to games likeRainbow Six Siege. 2019’sModern Warfareintroduced wall-mounting, and leaning around blocks of cover, so this seems like a natural progression of that, allowing player to lean anywhere. It seems as though Infinity Ward is going for a slightly more methodical, strategical approach to gameplay this time round, and subtle mechanical additions like this should help to do just that.

The trailer also showcased the return of the fan-favorite dolphin dive move. Introduced inCall of Duty: Black Ops, the dolphin dive was activated by holding down the duck button while sprinting forward, causing the player to dive forward, and keep them in a prone position. LaterCall of Dutyentries, including 2019’sModern Warfare, changed the dolphin dive in favor of a slide, and now it seems as thoughModern Warfare 2will offer the best of both worlds, with players being able to both slide and dolphin dive.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
