Summary

Players who have wrongfully gained access to the MWZ Ray Gun Wonder Weapon inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer are experiencing interesting repercussions. Season 1 ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3has just recently begun, bringing with it two new 6v6 maps in Meat and Greece, two new killstreaks, new modes, and more.

One of the limited-time game modes set to come toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3as part of Season 1 Reloaded is Vortex. In this 6v6 multiplayer mode, one player holds the iconic Ray Gun wonder weapon, which wasbrought forward intoModern Warfare 3as part of it’s co-op Zombiescomponent. Whoever terminates the player wielding the Ray Gun in Vortex gets to pick it up for their own use. The Ray Gun has frequently been hailed as one of the most powerful weapons inCall of DutyZombies throughout the years. As such, it’ll likely be incredibly powerful when used against other players inModern Warfare 3’s upcoming Vortex mode.

It seems cheaters have been able to gain access to MWZ’s Ray Gun before the release of Vortex mode, using it in othernormalModern Warfare 3multiplayer matches. On Twitter, Call of Duty Updates has reported that these cheaters, who are gaining a wrongful advantage over others by using the Ray Gun outside of MWZ, are being punished in an interesting way. Now, cheaters who fire the Ray Gun will inflict damage upon themselves. With this, it seems that illegal wielders of the Ray Gun would be eliminating themselves in just a shot or two, effectively rendering the weapon useless.

It’s unclear if wrongful Ray Gun users only receive damage upon hitting an opponent with the weapon, or if it happens with every shot fired. Regardless, this strange punishment seems like it could be effective, at least on paper. Time will tell whether cheaters will stop using the Ray Gun now that it inflicts damage on the user. Since Sledgehammer Games has been able to change how the Ray Gun behaves in the hands of cheaters, one must wonder why it has yet to fully remove the weapon fromModern Warfare 3’s multiplayerentirely.

It would be safe to assume that this self-inflicting punishment for cheaters wrongfully using the Ray Gun in multiplayer is a bandage solution, and that Sledgehammer Games is hopefully working on a permanent long-term fix before Vortex mode launches later in Season 1. Players under Call of Duty Updates' tweet have expressed that Sledgehammer should ban the Ray Guncheaters inModern Warfare 3. Perhaps this is still on the table as an option if the self-damage punishment isn’t a strong enough deterrent.
