According to Blizzard,World of Warcraftplayers might be able to make guilds with both Alliance and Horde players in the future. ThoughWorld of Warcrafthas nothing concrete to announce yet, players might eventually be able to play alongside members of the opposite faction in every aspect of the game.

Previously,World of Warcraftgame director Ion Hazzikostas expressed his desireto allow cross-faction guilds in the future during an interview with Raider.io beforeDragonflight’slaunch. Though he was not able to give any solid details, Hazzikostas made it clear he wanted to add the option toWorld of Warcrafteventually.

More recently, PCGamesN spoke toWorld of Warcraftproduction director Pat Dawson about cross-faction guilds in the future. Dawson described cross-faction play as an evolving system. “You’re seeing incremental changes being made over time–the first was cross-faction raiding, then cross-faction instances.”Dragonflightadded the ability for players on both factions to share mobs–another milestone toward bringing these players together. With word from two lead Blizzard developers, it is clearWorld of Warcraftintends to gradually add this feature once it works out the logistical problems in doing so.

“Then we’ll see what’s next, and what’s next after that, and eventually move toward a world where we’re looking to do something like [cross-faction guilds] in the future, but in terms of timeline there’s nothing I can share.”

World of Warcraftfirst opened the floodgates between factions by allowing them to party up for dungeons, raids, and PvP inShadowlandspatch 9.2.5. Hazzikostas declared thatShadowlandshad brought a formal end to the long-running faction war, and the story ofDragonflightsupports this with the Alliance and Horde working togetherto aid the denizens of the Dragon Isles. Allowing players to create cross-faction guilds would be a natural evolution of this new philosophy.

Most players are glad to hearWorld of Warcraftis considering allowing cross-faction guilds. While the two-faction system allowedWorld of Warcraftto stand out with its focus on conflict and competition in the past, nearly two decades of dividing its playerbase in two has bred an environment of toxicity and negativity between Alliance and Horde players. AllowingWorld of Warcraftplayers to bridge this gap incrementallyas it moves forward is a natural evolution that will hopefully improve the community over time.

Of course, there are detractors who do not wish the faction war to ever end inWorld of Warcraft. These players were first attracted toWorld of Warcraftbecause of the warring factions, and the state of its conflict has enabledworld PvP inWoWto become something truly unique among MMOs. Luckily, cross-faction partying is an opt-in system, and players can easily avoid cross-faction tagging while participating in War Mode, so players can also safely expect cross-faction guilds to be optional ifWorld of Warcraftadds them.

World of Warcraftis available now on PC.
