Despite underperforming sales when it launched back in 2003, the critical reception for the firstBeyond Good and Evilgame was mostly positive, and the title won multiple gaming awards, leading to a desire from designer and writer Michael Ansel for a sequel. In 2008, it was announced thatBeyond Good and Evil 2would be coming, but it then took nearly ten years before Ubisoft officially unveiled the game in 2017. Since then, rumors ofdevelopment hell have swirled aroundBeyond Good and Evil 2.
However, it seems that things may be picking up in the development ofBeyond Good and Evil 2. In early July, at a Q&A Ubisoft confirmed that it still believed the game was on its way to being released, even going so far as listingBeyond Good and Evil 2as in active development. This doesn’t indicate that the game could be launching any time soon, but it does imply work is being done. Now, fans have further proof of that as it appearsBeyond Good and Evil 2has landed itself a new Lead Writer.

Sarah Arellano announced on Twitter that she will be joiningBeyond Good and Evil 2as the project’s Lead Writer. Previously, Arellano has worked as a Narrative Designer at Blizzard, writing forWorld of Warcraft. Also, more recently she hasworked at Volition on theSaints Rowrebootwhich is set to release in August 2022. It’s clear then, that Arellano joins the team working onBeyond Good and Evil 2with plenty of narrative design and writing experience, hopefully creating an interesting story for players in the unique sci-fi setting of the franchise.
As mentioned, just because news is picking up onBeyond Good and Evil 2again does not mean that gamers will be getting a close look at the title anytime soon. As the game has just got a new Lead Writer, this likely means that the story ofBeyond Good and Evil 2is still in the works, implying that the rest of development is also a ways off being complete. However, with the silence from Ubisoft only being occasionally interrupted by reiterations of work still being done on the game, it is hard to tell what state it is in.
Still, it is good to know thatBeyond Good and Evil 2hasn’t been completely abandoned. For a while, many fans had assumed that due to the game’s long development, it would eventually be canceled, and there were even someBeyond Good and Evil 2developers awaiting that cancellationas well.
