Recently, Ubisoft confirmed that it will have 5 triple-A releases by March 2021. Three of these are games that have been previouslydelayed, namelyWatch Dogs: Legion,Rainbow Six Quarantine, andGods and Monsters, whereas the other two all are but officially confirmed to be the viking-focusedAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokand the now-leakedFar Cry 6.
This shouldn’t be surprising for anyone, as these are some of Ubisoft’s largest titles, andAC: Ragnarokhas been rumored for quite some time now. This is the first real mention ofFar Cry 6, though, even if it’s no less surprising. The real question now is whatFar Cry 6will look like, considering the franchise has perfected a formula of an interesting backdrop alongside an interesting villain.

Far Cry, the very first game, took place in Micronesia, whileFar Cry 2took the franchise to Africa.Far Cry 3brought in the iconic villain Vaas Montenegro and took place on Rook Island in the Pacific. The next numbered entry took players to the Himalayas and pitted them against Pagan Min, whileFar Cry 5brought players to Montanain a fight against a religious cult. And these are only the number entries, practically beginning the question of whereFar Cry 6will go.
Far Cry 6: Alaska
It’s worth mentioning that Ubisoft has put out a survey before, asking for input on possible locations, and one of those was an environment-survival game based in Alaska. In other words, alongside fighting against the primary antagonist in the region, the harsh climate of Alaska would be a common factor. With its low population, variety of regions such as its Denali Mountain and Aleutian Islands, and economy based on fishing, natural gas, and oil, there’s a lot of potential story angles forFar Cry 6.
Whether it was going against some fictional enemy, corrupt oil magnates, or even the United States armed forces, Alaska is the perfect balance between environment and possible enemies forFar Cry 6to explore.
Far Cry 6: Peru
If the next entry in the franchise isn’t keen to return to the United States, Peru and its jungles are another good option. Not only would the natural environment be more of a throwback for the franchise, but the focus on drugs and the cocaine industry in Peru would also be fitting for the franchise.Far Cry 6could even be mostly based in cocaine valley, but there’s one big determining factor that likely means this won’t be the case.
Namely, Peru and Bolivia share a border. This is important because another Ubisoft title,Ghost Recon Wildlands, which has already explored similar themes. Furthermore, it’s a known fact that theBolivian government wasn’t happy with Ubisoft, so the gaming company could be looking for something a little less controversial.
Far Cry 6: North Korea
If it wasn’t, however, a more likely setting would be North Korea. Not only is its climate and environment diverse, but there’s a monsoon season that could add another layer to its gameplay factor. North Korea has actually been tossed around for quite some time by fans ofFar Cry, so it would also be great fan service to see a game steeped into North Korean politics.
However, if for that reason alone, that’s a point against inFar Cry 6. Workarounds for this would be simple enough, though, by either setting the game in the near future or the past. It still doesn’t seem too likely, but exploring a political regime isn’t really after the question.Watch Dogs: Legionis inspired by Brexit, after all, so it remains to be seen if this is a developing theme for Ubisoft.

Far Cry 6: Japan
There’s a high-demand for games set in Japan. Whether it’s set in the age of the Samurai or the modern Yakuza, there’s plenty of room for exploration. And sinceAssassin’s Creedkeeps skipping this highly demanded region, aFar Crygame set here would be interesting. Notably,Far Cry 6set in modern Japan could theoretically be more urban than most games in the franchise, but many thought Montana was impossible prior to its announcement.
Far Cry 6: Australia
Another region that is more realistic and in high demand isAustralia. There’s the old adage that “everything in Australia wants to kill you,” which would make a ton of sense forFar Cry 6. Whether it’s the wildlife like cassowaries, snakes, crocodiles, and sharks or the intense weather like droughts, storms, and bushfires, there’s a lot that can be said about the environment of Australia playing a huge role in the game.
Furthermore, considering it exists in the Oceania region much like Micronesia, it would be present the unique opportunity of remaking the originalFar Crygame for those that have never played it. This isn’t without precedent either, as theFar Cry 5Season Pass came withFar Cry 3: Classic Edition, meaningFar Cry 6could essentially be seen as a two-game release if it followed this pattern.
