Kingdom Hearts, the beloved game franchise that combines Disney and Square Enix properties, is infamous for its surprisingly convoluted storyline. But underneath that confusing complexity, this series is home to some of the most interesting, charismatic, and deep characters in the history of JRPGs.
There is no question that the heroes, like Sora, Riku, or Kairi, are excellent characters on their own. But everybody knows a story is only as good as its villain. Luckily,Kingdom Heartsis filled to the brim withsome amazing antagonistswith great characterization, intricate designs, and some incredible boss fights. And the best part is that not all of them are an incarnation of Xehanort.

After all, this series features a solid cast of amazing villains that deserve their placement in this article, some of which sadly had to be omitted in the original version.This updated version of the list includes new entries for a few additional fan-favorite villains that players love to hate.
Nowadays,Kingdom Heartsfeatures a lot of more conventional JRPG original antagonists. However, the series still has roots inits Disney elements. Back in the first installment,Maleficent, the evil witch fromSleeping Beauty, created an entire organization solely comprised of classic Disney villains, like Jafar, Captain Hook, Oogie Boogie, and more.
Though Sora and company defeated all these villains several times, Maleficent keeps coming back. She’s the series’ quintessential Disney villain, and fans love her for that. She’s old-school evil, and she’s never ashamed of it. Even if bigger and more powerful antagonists keep appearing, Maleficent still manages to find her way into the plot of the series in one way or another.
9Vexen
An Unhinged Evil Scientist
Vexen’simportance as a key figure inKingdom Hearts’overall plot can’t be understated. After all, Organization XIII’s researcheris entirely responsible for the Replica Program. This not only gave the heroes a lot of trouble, but it’s also the reason beloved characters like Xion or Riku Replica exist in the first place.
The “evil scientist” trope may feel a bit cliché, but Vexen is a delightful villain that actually stands out. He’s always focused on his research and his inventions, which drives him to mess with the lives of others. Vexen’s sudden redemption inKingdom Hearts 3was truly unexpected, and made him even more interesting as a character.
The evil doppelgänger is a classic trope in fiction, and it was inevitable thatKingdom Heartswould eventually tackle it. It was extremely effective, becauseVanitasis the dark part ofVentus, a kind and pure boywith a mysterious past. Ever since they were separated byMaster Xehanort, this evil clone just wanted to go back to his original body.
Vanitas is everything that Ventus isn’t: mean-spirited, spiteful, and cruel, which is an interesting contrast. And the reveal that he has Sora’s face (and the same voice actor,Haley Joel Osment) because of the connection Ventus has with him, was one of the most shocking twists in the entire franchise.
7Larxene
A Sadistic Woman Who Enjoys Tormenting Others
There are severalKingdom Heartsvillains with complex personalities and some redeeming qualities. Then there’sLarxene,the twelfth member of the original Organization XIII. She’s an evil nobody who enjoys mocking her opponents, and even seems to take some pleasure in their suffering. However, she also has a fascinating weapon and fighting style.
Larxene feels out of place in a franchise that regularly features Disney characters, and that’s what makes her such an incredible villain. Both Sora and the player end up despising her because of her personality and actions, which is a sign of how well written she is. Larxene is a fun villain that most fans love to hate, and she was a key figure in both versions of the evil Organization.
6Saix
Xemnas’ Despicable Right-Hand Man
Saixis a more personal villain, like no other in the series. He’s closely related toAxel/Lea, since they were childhood friends who accidentally joined Organization XIII. But Axel slowly became kinder and friendlier due to his connections with Roxas and Xion. On the other hand, Saix wanted to get closer to their leader, Xemnas, which soured their friendship.
Players have grown to resent Saix on several occasions. He’s the member of the Organization who treated Roxas the worst inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.He’s also the member who interacts with Sora the most throughoutKingdom Hearts 2, constantly playing with the hero’s emotions in heinous ways. Luckily,this means that the action-packed boss fights against himwas extremely satisfying. Saix’s unexpected redemption at the very end ofKingdom Hearts 3was quite rewarding, as it felt like he had earned his place alongside Axel, Xion and Roxas.
It’s a well-known fact that most of theKingdom Heartsvillains are related to Xehanort in one way or another. So it was a breath of fresh air to have an antagonist who not only had his own agency but activelyworked against Xehanort’s plans. What’s even better is thatMarluxiawas introduced inKingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, the second title in the franchise.
Marluxia was the ruler ofCastle Oblivion, who decided to betray Organization 13 with some of his own allies. Fans should never be fooled by his calm demeanor and soft-spoken attitude, as Marluxia is one of the most bloodthirsty characters in the series. It’s no wonder he’s seen as the equivalent of the Grim Reaper, with his intimidating pink scythe. Even when he was dragged to theReal Organization 13inKingdom Hearts 3, Marluxia seemed to have his own plan and motivations.
4Ansem, Seeker Of Darkness
The First Villain Of The Series
Introduced in the very firstKingdom Heartsgame, players were surprised to find out that the scientist known asAnsem, Seeker of Darkness, was behind everything. And the surprise grew even more when they found out that he was actually Xehanort’s heartless in the sequel.
While he may be more one-dimensional than other antagonists,Ansem & Riku’s dynamicis one of the story’s strongest points, especially when the young Keyblade wielder had to succumb to his darkness in order to save the day. Ansem’s eventual demise inKingdom Hearts 3ended up being one of the most bitter-sweet moments in the series because it seemed like he grew somewhat attached to Riku. And, in the process, players grew attached to him.
3Master Xehanort
The Evil Mastermind Behind Everything
Throughout the events of theKingdom Heartsstory, both Sora and the player keep hearing about someone named Xehanort. It isn’t untilKingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleepthat players finally meet the man. Master Xehanort is an evil Keyblade Master who can control darkness and wants to create the x-blade in order to summon Kingdom Hearts. He’s pretty much responsible for allthe bad events in the series.
Xehanort is one of those stubborn yet charming villains who always finds a way to come back. Whether it’s Master Xehanort, Young Xehanort, Terra-Xehanort, his Heartless, or his Nobody, every single incarnation is as evil and intelligent as the previous one. When he finally managed to come back and control his real Organization 13,Kingdom Hearts 3, he was one of the most detestable villains in the series. And this made his inevitable defeat at the hands of Sora, Donald, Goofy, and the Guardians of Light much more satisfying.
Final Fantasyfans may be familiar with the concept of the second-in-command who was actually pulling the strings all along, and this seems to be the case withXigbar, who was revealed to have beenLuxu, an apprentice of theMaster of Masters, all along. Even if this will most likely be more relevant in future installments, there is a lot to enjoy about the villainous Xigbar already.
Xigbar is possibly thefunniest character in the entire series.His dialogue is always so sarcastic, witty, and well-written that he often stars in some of the most memorable cutscenes in the games. But the best part is that his charm never takes away from his smug and evil personality, which makes him a complex yet charismatic antagonist that players won’t mind facing over and over.
1Xemnas
An Empty Yet Complex Vessel
As previously mentioned, some incarnations of Xehanort were born of his possession of Terra’s body. But what’s especially disappointing is that most of them almost never display traits of their good counterpart, and act mostly as the evil mastermind. But Terra-Xehanort’s nobody, known asXemnas, is the biggest exception to this rule.
Of course, asthe founder of the originalOrganization 13, Xemnas is an important villain in this story. The implication that he just wanted a heart in order to feel emotions again made it easier to empathize with him. However, like Xehanort, he is calm and manipulative, but he manages to be very intimidating as well. This is enhanced by the huge array of powers he displays in his boss fights and his deep and iconic voice, provided by the talented Paul St. Peter.
But Xemnas is an especially interesting antagonist because he displays aspects of Terra’s personality, even more so than any other version of this character. Even without his memories, he seems to have some attachment to Aqua and Ventus. This unique dichotomy is something that is yet to be seen again in theKingdom Heartsfranchise, and it makes Xemnas one of the deepest and most complex villains in the series.
