Electronic Arts announced that it is planning to release the next installment of its first-person shooter franchiseBattlefieldon next-generation consolesduring the company’s 2020 third quarter fiscal earnings call in January. That means work on their current title,Battlefield 5, will have to end eventually, and based on an update from Senior Producer Ryan McArthur it seems as though that endpoint is coming soon.
McArthur’s update on theBattlefield 5website released today says that once the current season of content called “Into the Jungle” wraps on April 29, the developers will “release one more standalone update this summer.” He says that June is a tentative goal but that may change due to the difficulties associated withEA’s work from home policythat was put in place as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

As far as what players can expect, McArthur leaves things at a somewhat vague promise that there will be “new content,” and then afterward there will be weekly rewards and “various weekly initiatives” to encourage community play. He invokesEA’s “Stay Home, Play Together” initiativeat the top of the post while thankingBattlefieldplayers for creating “mind-blowing content.”
While the summer update is apparently set to be the last major content dump forBattlefield 5, McArthur assures that work will still be put into the game to ensure it remains a fun, playable experience for fans of the first-person shooter. Not only will there be weekly rewards and events, but the developer’s anti-cheat team will also keep monitoring the game and taking in reports about suspected cheaters so they can “help us keep the fight fair.”
Even though no hints were given as to what content will be seen in the game’s next update,Battlefield 5’s Chapter 6has offered things like contests and cycling game modes all the way through its final week. The developers also just re-started their game’s South African servers to support stay at home efforts.
ThoughBattlefield 6is on the table for EA’s developer DICE, a recent job listing from DICE LA — a branch of the studio previously known for support rather than stand-alone development — has also suggested that theBattlefielddevs may be working on a new series. While it’s unclear when the world will find out more about these future endeavors, fans of the franchise can at least look forward to hopefully seeing more inBattlefield 5this summer.
