An Avatar LEGO Game Could Finally Be On The Cards Now
Avatar’sworld of Pandorais one of the most mesmerizing settings ever put on film. One of the greatest technical achievements in cinema, James Cameron’sAvatar, and its sequel, go to painstaking lengths to show just how beautiful Pandora can be, with its floating cliffs, gigantic trees, bioluminescent foliage, and deep blue waters all combining together to give those movies an atmosphere of true wonder and awe. And it’s these wondrous settings that would make for a perfect LEGO game.
While most LEGO games are remembered most fondly for their lighthearted interpretations of the source material, a key component of the LEGO game experience is exploration. FromLEGO Harry PottertoLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, every LEGO game puts a strong emphasis on player-freedom and exploration, with each hub-world and level encouraging players to explore every nook and cranny to find collectibles and fun little Easter eggs.Avatar’s world of Pandora is perfectly suited to this format, and now withthe release ofAvatar 2: The Way of Water, there’s enough content there for a full LEGO video game adaptation.
LEGO games tend to collect a whole series of movies, often trilogies, and boil them down into several distinct chapters. This ensures that there’s more than enough content to adapt into unique levels and hub-worlds. Before now, it would have been pretty difficult for LEGO to adaptAvatarinto a video game, with just one movie’s worth of content to use as a basis. LEGO has only done this once before withLEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and as most critics and fans stated at the time, the game was severely lacking meaningful content.
But withAvatar 2: The Way of Waternow out, there should be enough content between the two movies for a full-length LEGO adventure game. On top of the new source material, LEGO has also produced a number of sets based on the movies, so any future LEGOAvatarvideo game adaptation already has a starting point for certain character and vehicle models and the general look of Pandora’s LEGO environments. That being said, it may be better for LEGO to wait a few more years untilthe current slate ofAvatarsequelshave all been released, as that would give LEGO five movies to draw from. Alternatively, LEGO could use a similar approach to theLEGO Star WarsandLEGO Harry Potterseries, where the movies were split in half to produce two different games, and then a collection of these games is available later on.
