However, the opening theme has more to offer viewers than just the music. The visuals share so many insights on what is coming in the final episodes of the series. Even those who have binged the theme a hundred times by now might have missed some key details.

10Mirrors Scenes From Season 2

The theme songbegins similarly to the OP of Season 2, where the main characters are getting ready by putting their clothes and gear on. However, instead of Mikasa putting on her iconic red scarf like in the Season 2 theme, she is seen taking it off. This shows how, although the main trio have traveled down the same path together for many years, now they are pulled apart and losing trust in one another.

9The Lyrics

The heavy metal style of the newest theme song features musical screaming in some areas and gentle singing in others. The type of singing changes based on the lyrics, which are presumably from Eren’s point of view.

The lead singer screams threatening lyrics such as “Rumbling, rumbling, beware, coming for you,” but gets gentler and more passionate when singing “All I ever wanted to do was do right things,” and “If I lose it all, slip and fall, I will never look away…” This emphasizes thetwo conflicting sides that Erenhas on the path he is heading down to end the torment of his people and bring freedom for the suffering Paradis citizens.

Characters who have long since passed away make an appearance in the theme, including Bertholdt and Ymir. Though they won’t be in the season as active characters, their stories continue on and influence the actions of those still alive.

7Foreshadows The Rumbling

The OP starts off by showing actual events from the Rumbling, the world-ending event that Eren and Zeke wish to set in motion.Hundreds of Colossal Titanscome apart from the walls, transforming into an unbeatable moving wall of destruction that is crushing everything below it.

The lyrics scream “The Rumbling is coming for you” as the shots commence, showing what could happen if the event actually ends up occurring.

6Bird Symbolism

There are multiple shots of birds flying across the screen, which is something that will also appear throughout the rest of Season 4. Birds represent Freedom in theAttack on Titanmanga and anime, as they can fly wherever they want without walls or Titans stopping them.

Eren wishes to achieve freedom for himself and his people, which is why birds are seen around him as he walks down his path alone. In one shot, a flock of white birds fly across the screen in front of him, and in another, the birds are soaring beside him as he traverses the top of the wall.

5Loss of Friendship

The OP ends with Eren, Mikasa, and Armin running up the flowery hill in their hometown. They start as small kids with big smiles and hearts of hope, then Eren transforms into a teenager Scout as he reaches the tree. When the main character turns around as a full-grown adult, he is alone, no longer with his lifelong friends Mikasa and Armin.

The series revealed in the first part of Season 4 thatEren was no longer with the Scouts, and is instead working alone towards a goal only he knows. He continued to lose the trust of his friends, turning them against him as he walked down a bloody, dangerous path.

4Sasha’s Grave

There is a very brief shot of Jean, Connie, Mikasa, and Armin visiting Sasha’s grave after their grim return from Marley. Her death deeply impacted the group, having been by their side for so many years.

Eren is noticeably absent, as he actively distances himself from his longtime friends. The dark and gloomy graveyard is filled with tombstones of otherfallen Paradis citizens, setting the mood for the season to come.

3Past/Present/Future

Since this is the final theme song the series will ever have, being the final season, the animators really highlighted the change that the characters faced between the very beginning of the series to the very end.

19-year-old Eren transforms into 10-year-old Eren, the Scouts are seen all together back in their early days, there are glimpses of the kids back when they were in training together. It’s powerful and really shows how much trauma and death the group of main characters have faced throughout the story.

Young Eren, Mikasa, and Armin in their hometown

The very last shot of the OP is a footprint in the earth where someone has crushed a butterfly, killing it and cutting its wing. This shot could be symbolism of the death of the main characters innocence or purity.

Butterflies typically symbolize rebirth and change, so seeing the butterfly as dead on the ground could suggest that there’s no way to change the path the world is on. Some viewers theorize that the dead butterfly means a major main character will die before the series' end.

1Insight to the Titan Power

Near the end of the opening theme, viewers get a glimpse of the all-powerful being Ymir, which is spoken about throughout the series but has never been seen in a physical form before. She ascends into the air as a glowing entity and emits a beam of light that looks like a tree, with its branching reaching across the vast expanse of space above it.

There are many things that this image could resemble, including the powerful link that Ymir has toall of the Titan shifters. Only future episodes will reveal what this truly means.
