Summary

Hundreds ofArmored Core 6: Fires of Rubiconplayers have banded together in order to brainstorm a callsign for one of the game’s most tragic characters. Their efforts to do so arrive mere days afterArmored Core 6: Fires of Rubiconreleased to rave reviews.

Warning! Minor early-game spoilers for Armored Core 6 ahead.Thefirst chapter ofArmored Core 6contains just under a dozen missions, including Destroy the Tester AC (02-B). This assignment introduces the player to the concept of brief missions that are essentially one-on-one boss fights and also pits them against their first tester AC, which is similar to the protagonist’s own mech. The war machine was manufactured by Dafeng, a rival of the Arquebus Corporation that’s paying for its delivery to be intercepted. And though the mission itself is fairly straightforward, completing it is presented as a bitter achievement, not least because the target AC is operated by an inexperienced Dafeng student pilot.

As the fight goes on, the trainee goes from expressing excitement about keeping up with the player’s much more experienced mercenary to fear in the face of defeat, which finally turns into resignation moments before his death. He uses his dying words to mournfully assert how he just wanted a callsign of his own. Touched by the character’s tragic death, one Reddit user recently started a thread asking for theArmored Core 6community to fulfill the late student pilot’s dying wish, prompting hundreds of callsign suggestions. The full thread can befound here.

Many serious responses to the thread proposed anime-inspired callsigns like Yamcha and Zaku, inspired byDragon BallandMobile Suit Gundam, respectively. However, the majority of the most upvoted suggestions were tongue-in-cheek, ranging from the likes of Fodder and Loot Box to Piñata and Armored Coffin.

Moral dilemmas aside, killing the Dafeng student pilot is something that the players will be incentivized to do more than once. Namely, this unfortunate character happens to drop a Combat Log, which increases the protagonist’s Loghunt ranking, so completing this mission multiple times is a great way tounlock more parts in the early hours ofArmored Core 6.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubiconis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
