With a new season ofApex Legendsaround the corner, now is a great time to get to know the Outlands’ newest antihero, Mad Maggie. A mercenary with a death wish, Maggie has been drifting in and out ofApexlore for a while now, but she’ll be taking center stage with Season 12: Defiance.

10She’s A Freedom Fighter

Hailing from the Outlands planet of Salvo, Maggie has been fighting for Salvonian independence for as long as she’s been alive. Back when Season 8 was first announced, Maggie made her first appearance alongsideexplosives-focused legend Fusein a story trailer.

Maggie had been getting into trouble since she was a kid, and even though she took on various underworld contracts for profit, she never stopped caring about Salvo. Now that Salvo has officially joined Syndicate Space, Maggie is more motivated than ever to bring her planet’s oppressors crashing down.

9She Has Serious History With Fuse

Both Maggie and Fuse were born on Salvo and have known each other their entire lives. The two of them fought side-by-side for years, and their friendship seemed to mirror that of a cheesy 80’s action film.

But nothing good can last forever. When Fuse decided to leave Salvo and join the Apex Games, Maggie — who had just learned that her planet had joined forces with the corrupt criminal Syndicate Alliance — was pushed over the line. It was Maggie who blew Fuse’s arm off, ending their decades-long friendship.

8Her Real Name Is Margaret

Thankfully, Mad Maggie isn’t the name her parents gave her. Maggie was born Margaret Kohere, a name which combined with her Kiwi accent suggests she’s of Maori descent (a theory backed up byRespawn casting New Zealander Nicola Kawana as her voice actor).

While little is known about her early childhood, Maggie went on to form the mercenary group Cracked Talon alongside Fuse. Now 55-years-old, Maggie is one year older than her former sidekick and will be the oldest human in the Apex Games. (Revenant is technically older, but as a Simulacrum, he’s no longer human).

7She’s Actually Crazy

What’s in a name? A lot when it comes to Mad Maggie. She hasn’t just rioted, killed, and raided all these years — she’s done it in style. For starters, she blew off her best friend’s arm on a whim, just because he was abandoning the cause.

Most recently, when Maggie was facing her sentencing for a litany of crimes against the Syndicate, she broke her own jaw just so she could spit one of her own teeth into the eyes of her judge.

And just before being dropped into her first match at the Apex Games, Maggie took a bite out of one of her captors, flinging him out of their dropship —that sure is one way to land faster.

6She Attacked Kings Canyon

Maggie’s first appearance inApexhasn’t been forgotten by the other legends. When Fuse arrived on the scene, Maggie was there to sabotage it all.

During Fuse’s welcome ceremony, Maggie hijacked the IMS Thermopylae, turning its cannons on the crowd before detonating a series of high-grade explosive charges set throughout the northern section of Kings Canyon. The Thermopylae itself crashed into the map, changing the landscape of Kings Canyon forever. Maggie even had the audacity to brand her symbol on one of the island’s plateaus for all to see.

5Her Tactical Ability Can Penetrate Cover

Maggie’s kit has finally been confirmed by Respawn. Her tactical ability, called Riot Drill, is definitely going to be something for Maggie’s enemies to watch out for. Prior to Defiance, if a legend took cover behind anything from a wall to a crate, they’d be considered relatively safe. But the Riot Drill changes all that.

Now, if players are facing up against Mad Maggie, they better be ready to bail. If they stick around when the Drill detonates, a jet of fire will burst through and fry them to a crisp. It’s alla bit reminiscent of the Rampage LMG, but on another level. The Rampage, when loaded with a thermite grenade, can knock down doors, but Maggie’s Riot Drill seems to work on much, much more.

Apexfans may rememberthe infamous War Games event from Season 8. Following her deadly surprise attack on Fuse’s welcome ceremony, Maggie took over the Games once again. Unfortunately for the game’s community, the event was riddled with bugs, and several of the planned game modes were ultimately abandoned for various reasons.

Back then, all players had ever heard from Maggie were a few voice lines. Now that Maggie is entering the Games as a legend herself,Apex’s player base had better prepare themselves: she’s left the announcer life behind in favor oftakinglives.

3She Runs Faster With Shotguns

Believe it or not, this is only one-half of Maggie’s passive ability, Warlord’s Ire. While legends likeBangalore can run faster when being shot at, Maggie’s passive lets her run faster whenever she’s holding a shotgun. For players addicted to speed, Warlord’s Ire may be just what they’ve been looking for. While she certainly won’t be beating Octane in a race any time soon, every bit of speed is an advantage in a fast-paced game likeApex.

More interestingly, Warlord’s Ire follows a recent trend in Respawn’s legend design: giving legends advantages with certain gun classes. Notably, Rampart — Season 6’s legend — has faster reloads and increased magazine capacity with LMGs. Maggie’s new ability could be an indication that we can expect future legends to boast buffs for using other weapons like sniper rifles, pistols, or SMGs.

Lifeline fights behind Rampart’s Amped Cover, but Mad Maggie’s Riot Drill knocks her down in Apex Legends.

2Her Passive Lets Her See Damaged Enemies

The other half of Maggie’s Warlord’s Ire passive ability lets her see damaged enemies through obstacles. Similar to Bloodhound’s tactical ability, Warlord’s Ire will promote aggressive playstyles, as players will need to get up close and personal to take advantage of the new ability. It’s not yet clear from the various blog posts and trailers whether Warlord’s Ire will let Maggie’s squad see her tagged enemies, too.

In either case, seeing a fleeing enemy’s location is a powerful tool for any legend to have. When Defiance drops on Feb. 8, players should be ready to pounce on this huge new opportunity.

1She’s Been Sentenced To Die

Maggie isn’t in the Apex Games by choice. The Syndicate — the bad guys who run the Games — has decided to teach Maggie a lesson for her lifelong attacks on their interests. Rather than execute her like so many of the other Salvonian freedom fighters, the Syndicate has taken note of her brutal, unforgiving personality and put Maggie on display as a sort of freakshow.

Key to her survival was Duardo Silva, Octane’s evil father. It was Duardo who spared Maggie from execution by firing squad, but Duardo certainly has an ulterior motive hidden just out of sight.Duardo’s story is a long one in the making, dating all the way back to Season 5’s original comic book. Soon, though, all may be revealed.
