WithNew Tales from the Borderlandsnow available, many fans are hoping that Gearbox will turn its attention toBorderlands 4. Currently, fans have no idea what the next entry in the main series will look like, as everything from specific plot details to the Vault Hunter cast remains unknown. However, fans can surely expect a massive lineup of guns inBorderlands 4, and one of the Legendaries should be directly inspired byNew Tales from the Borderlands.

While the main appeal ofNew Tales from the Borderlandsis the characters, withL0U13in particular being as lovable as it gets, the game also features an important device with some interesting powers. Throughout the story, this device changes forms and abilities, but all of its functions would be fun to see again via a usable weapon in the next mainBorderlandsgame. If done correctly, it could be one of the most memorable Legendaries yet.

How Anu’s Device Works in New Tales from the Borderlands

Anu’s device appears at the very beginning of the game, with Gearbox making its importance to the story clear right off the bat. After Marcus Kincaid finishes his narration, gamers assume control of Anu as she searches for the Eridium to power her device - an item she is adamant is not a gun. After failing to pitch the non-lethal device toRhys Strongfork, the CEO of Atlas and one of the protagonists from the originalTales from the Borderlands, Anu finds herself in the middle of a Tediore invasion.

With her device in tow,Anuradha Dargets into a number of interesting situations, and the weapon consistently keeps her alive. When fired, it mimics a Siren’s power, teleporting the targeted item away and sending it on “vacation.” While the device is a prototype, meaning that Anu cannot bring things back, it is still very powerful. After collecting a mysterious green crystal from a Vault, the device’s functionality changes, as the crystal inserted within will heal anyone that is shot. While instantly curing any wound and bringing someone back from the dead is extreme, it could be a perfect mechanic for a looter shooter likeBorderlands.

How Anu’s Device Could Function in Borderlands 4

Like some ofBorderlands 3’s most memorable guns,Borderlands 4giving Anu’s device two firing modes could be an excellent way to represent its two functions. With the main mode, players could teleport enemies away. Assuming that Rhys has started taking Anu’s tech more seriously after she saved the day, an improved version of the device could have been created that is fully functional. If this is the case, players could bring enemies back whenever they fire the weapon again. This could be a great way to score environmental kills, dropping enemies off the map or near elemental barrels. Additionally, enemies could be moved toward an ally’s action skill.

As for the other firing mode, the green healing beam could be a perfect tool for co-op play. When equipped, players could restore the health of their allies, with Gearbox keeping the weapon balanced by not allowing it to restore shields orEridiumbeing needed to power it. Additionally, it could work as a revive gun, doubling as a long range way to pick up Vault Hunters stuck in fight for your life. Having this alternate healing option would add an interesting layer of strategy, as gamers engaging with tough content could be encouraged to use Anu’s device.

If added, the weapon could go by the name The Hermes, as this was one of the dialogue choices available when naming it inNew Tales from the Borderlands. The red text could also read “definitely not a gun,” playing on the running gag where Anu refuses to accept the idea of her life-saving creation being called a gun. With so much potential in The Hermes being a usableBorderlands 4weapon,Gearboxmay want to consider adding it in as a way to honorNew Tales from the Borderlands.

New Tales from the Borderlandsis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
